February 14th has a special meaning to those of us here in Western Civilization. We practice love to a fault with candy, Valentines Day cards, flowers, poetry and puppy dogs. This is an ancient tradition that can be traced back to the Roman Emperor Claudius II. He decreed that single men made better soldiers so he forbid them to marry. Valentine, believing this to be unjust, continued to perform marriages in secret. When this was discovered, Claudius ordered him put to death. It is alleged that before his death he wrote a letter to his lover and signed it, “From your Valentine”. He became one of the most popular saints in the Middle Ages in England and France.

Now contrast this with Islamic Culture, where in Saudi Arabia, Valentines Day is against the law. We should check in Berkeley, California because they may have banned it there also.

Really speaks volumes about a culture doesn’t it!
